Lecture Series No. 35 of SFL
Speaker: Meng Xia, Professor at the School of Foreign Languages, Shaanxi Normal University, PhD Supervisor, Head of the Russian Department, and Director of the Russian Center. She is the President of the Shaanxi Higher Education Research Association for University Russian Language Teaching, Director of the Russian Committee of the Shaanxi Translators Association, Board Member of the Shaanxi Overseas Students Association, and Vice President of its Soviet Union Branch, as well as a People’s Representative for Yanta district, Xi’an city. Professor Meng has received the “Bao Gang” Outstanding Teacher Award, the second university-level “Teaching Excellence” and “Educator” Awards, and was recognized as a Model Worker during the May 1st Labor Day by the Shaanxi Provincial Education, Science, Culture and Health System. Professor Meng was also honored for her contributions to the China-Central Asia Summit and achieved second place in the university finals of the 7th “Red Candle Cup” Teaching Innovation Competition. She leads the provincial-level first-class course “Chinese-Russian Translation” and manages a national-level first-class program development project. Her main research areas include linguistics, translation studies and Russian education. Professor Meng has led and completed one National Social Science Fund project, one sub-project of a major National Social Science Fund project, two Ministry of Education projects, two projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology for foreign experts, and three provincial projects. She has published over 40 papers, authored one monograph, translated seven works and contributed to seven textbooks.
Abstract: The speaker will share her experiences applying for the Chinese Academic Translation Project, focusing on aspects such as selecting original texts, collaborating with domestic and foreign publishers, writing application proposals, refining translation samples, and the translator's attitude and competence. Professor Meng will also explore the historical mission of the translator as an interpreter and communicator of cross-cultural significance in the context of mutual learning among civilizations. Besides, she will share the joys and challenges faced by translators as complex creative individuals navigating the vast sea of translation.

Lecture Series No. 36 of SFL
Speaker: Liu Xiaofeng, PhD from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Associate Professor at Xi’an International Studies University, Director of the Translation Research Center, and Head of the Translation Department in the School of English. His research focuses on translation theory, translation pedagogy, translation history, social translation studies, and English language and literature. Professor Liu is currently dedicated to pioneering research on translation without original texts. He has published over 40 academic papers in journals such as Chinese Translators Journal, Foreign Language Education, Shanghai Translation, Anhui University Journal, Academic Exchange and Language and Translation. Professor Liu has led one National Social Science Fund Chinese Academic Translation Project and three provincial-level projects, while also participating in various national and provincial major projects. His publications include three translated works (including co-translations) and one monograph. Professor Liu holds several professional positions, including Board Member and Deputy Secretary-General of the Social Translation Studies Committee of the China Comparative Studies Association, Executive Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Translation and International Communication Committee of the China Association for the Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In addition, he is also the Director of the Intercultural Communication Research Committee of the China Translators Association. Furthermore, Professor Liu is the member of the Council of the Applied Translation Research Professional Committee of the Chinese Comparative Study of English and Chinese, and the Editor-in-Chief of the Translation Horizons.
Abstract: The strategy of promoting Chinese culture abroad has gained significant attention within the Chinese translation community. Since its inception in 2010, the National Social Science Fund’s Chinese Academic Translation Project has seen rapid growth, and expands from a few dozen projects to 260 in 2024 in just 15 years. The application process is a systematic endeavor that requires collaboration across multiple fields and departments, as well as specialized thought and planning from applicants. This talk will reflect on personal experiences in the 2024 application process, and showcase how individual expertise and collective wisdom play vital roles, from defining research directions and selecting topics to completing application forms and finalizing translations. However, everything has its fundamental principles of operation. This speech, titled “Grounded in Self and Skillfully Leveraging External Forces”, draws on the speaker’s personal experience to reflect on his insights from the 2024 Chinese Academic Translation Project application process.

Speaker: He Hua, Associate Professor at the School of Foreign Languages, Northwest University, Director of the MTI Education Center, PhD in English Language and Literature, and Visiting Scholar at Southern Utah University. With over 20 years of experience in college English teaching and research, her research focuses on academic English, cultural translation and communication, and regional studies. Professor He has led more than ten projects, including the National Social Science Fund Chinese Academic Translation Project, Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Fund, and key projects supported by the Shaanxi Provincial Federation of Social Sciences and the Ministry of Education. Besides, Professor He also has published over 30 academic papers and received more than ten awards for her teaching, research, and social contributions. Her rewards include the “Outstanding Master’s Thesis Supervisor” at Northwest University and the “Second Prize for Graduate Education Achievements” in Shaanxi Province, and Outstanding Individual for Service and Support at the China-Central Asia Summit.
Abstract: The speaker will share insights and considerations for applying to the Chinese Academic Translation Project, and discuss topics such as preliminary preparations, exploring possibilities, communication with publishers, and ensuring translation quality.
