On the morning of June 29, 2024, a simulation international conference for undergraduates and graduate students was held at the Second Foreign Language Classroom on the Chang’an campus of Northwest University. Nearly 200 students from twenty departments engaged in extensive discussions on the topic of “Chinese Wisdom and the Construction of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind” through keynote speeches, thirteen sub-forums, and poster presentations. The conference was carefully organized by Professor Gao Shuling and Gao Minna from the School of Foreign Languages, with the Vice Dean of Teaching, Li Ming, attending the opening ceremony and delivering a speech.

This simulation international conference marks the eleventh graduate student simulation international conference and the second undergraduate simulation conference since the School of Foreign Languages first held a doctoral student simulation international conference in 2013. It represents an innovative exploration of blended English teaching reform within the international conference English course group, aimed at enhancing the internationalization of our graduate and undergraduate students through interactive project-based learning, where graduate students lead and undergraduate students learn from them.

The conference featured three major highlights. The first highlight was the joint participation of undergraduates and graduates discussing the significance of Chinese wisdom and solutions for building a community with a shared future. The second highlight was the broad range of topics, with students exploring the contributions of Chinese wisdom to global challenges from various perspectives, including climate change, war and military conflict, global health, poverty, healthcare, educational equality, aging populations, and law and justice. The third highlight was the diverse forms of student participation, allowing them to experience all aspects of an international conference through organizing, poster design, hosting, keynote speaking, paper presentations, wall exhibitions, video participation, conference services, and networking. Participants expressed that the conference provided “a very unique learning experience”, expressing their desire to communicate Chinese wisdom to the world and provide Chinese solutions for global issues, motivating them to improve their English and share compelling Chinese stories. Attendees hope more students will participate in future simulation international conferences.

This simulation international conference represents a bold attempt at integrating ideological education and curriculum reform in graduate and undergraduate programs at Northwest University. Over the next five years, the course group plans to organize joint simulation international conferences for doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students to offer a multi-layered and comprehensive international exchange experience for all students.
